Stocks

What is a Stock:

A stock is a security that represents the ownership of a fraction of a corporation. This entitles the owner of the stock to a proportion of the corporation's assets and earnings. Stocks are also called shares.

Stocks are used to raise capital for a company. When a company issues stock, it is selling a piece of ownership in the company to the investor. The investor then has the right to a share of the company's profits (in the form of dividends) and to vote on major corporate decisions. The value of a stock is determined by the company's earnings and the expectations of future earnings. The more profitable a company is, the more valuable its stock will be. Stocks are bought and sold on stock exchanges, which are regulated by the government.
